K5: The Concepts and Fundamentals of Data

Assessment Method: Project Report with presentation, questions and answers

Plain-English Explanation

K5 is about understanding the basics of data—how it’s stored, searched, organized, and used in businesses. It also covers different data formats, why they matter, and how information systems work to manage and process data.

Examples of How Apprentices Demonstrate This at Work

  • Using Excel to organize and filter large datasets

  • Explaining why a CSV file is used instead of an Excel file for importing data

  • Searching a company database to find customer information

  • Using Power Automate to pull data from one system and update another

  • Creating a simple report that shows how data is used to make decisions

Common Gaps and Misconceptions

  • Thinking all data is the same—ignoring structured vs unstructured data

  • Believing that file format doesn’t matter (e.g., using the wrong format for analysis)

  • Not understanding why data accuracy and consistency are critical

  • Assuming that “big data” only applies to large companies
