K2: Types of Digital Architecture

Assessment Method: Project Report with presentation, questions and answers

Plain-English Explanation

K2 is about understanding the different types of digital architecture your organization uses. This includes knowing the difference between physical storage (like on-site servers) and cloud storage, and understanding the role of operating systems and servers in keeping systems running.

Examples of How Apprentices Demonstrate This at Work

  • Explaining to a colleague why the company uses cloud storage instead of local servers

  • Comparing the benefits and risks of physical vs cloud storage in a report

  • Identifying which operating system a server runs on and why it matters

  • Supporting a migration project from on-premise storage to a cloud solution like OneDrive or SharePoint

Common Gaps and Misconceptions

  • Thinking “cloud” means the internet without understanding security and compliance

  • Believing physical servers are always more secure than cloud (or vice versa) without considering context

  • Not knowing that operating systems on servers differ from desktop OS (e.g., Windows Server vs Windows 10)

  • Ensures systems are scalable, secure, and cost-effective

  • Supports business continuity and disaster recovery planning

Portfolio Evidence Ideas

  • A diagram showing your organization’s digital architecture (physical and cloud components)

  • A short report comparing physical vs cloud storage for your company

  • Notes from a meeting where you explained the role of servers or operating systems

EPA-Style Questions

  • What are the main differences between physical storage and cloud storage?

  • Why might an organization choose a hybrid approach?

  • What role does an operating system play in digital architecture?

Embedded Topics

  • Sustainability: Cloud solutions can reduce energy use compared to on-site servers

  • Health & Safety: Physical server rooms require safe access and cooling systems
