B1: Works Independently and Takes Responsibility

Assessment Method: Professional Discussion underpinned by a portfolio

Plain-English Explanation

B1 is about showing that you can work on your own without constant supervision and take ownership of your tasks. It means being proactive, completing work to deadlines, and being accountable for your actions.

Examples of How Apprentices Demonstrate This at Work

  • Managing your own workload using Outlook Calendar or Microsoft To Do

  • Taking initiative to solve a problem without waiting to be told

  • Using Power Automate to set reminders for tasks and deadlines

  • Setting up mailbox rules to organize emails and stay on top of priorities

  • Documenting your work clearly so others can follow what you’ve done

Common Gaps and Misconceptions

  • Thinking independence means never asking for help—escalation when needed is part of responsibility

  • Missing deadlines because of poor planning

  • Not updating stakeholders on progress

  • Avoiding accountability when mistakes happen
